Clinical Aspect of Great Saphenous Vein WSR to Varicose Vein (Sirakautilya) and its Ayurvedic Management

Abstract

Venous insufficiency is the most common disorder of venous system and is usually manifested as varicose vein. The swllen, bulging and twisted bluish veins that become visible just beneath the skin surface and filled with abnormal gathering of blood are known as varicose vein which may be superficial ( just below the skin surface with filled capillaries) or deep (located deep beneath the muscles) . Although the varicose veins can occur anywhere but they are most common in longest superficial vein of lower limb i.e. great saphenous vein(GSV).The great saphenous vein is the major superficial vein of the medial leg and thigh.  Incompetency of Great saphenous vein is the very common cause of venous insufficiency in leg due to gravitational pull. The contemporary medicine has a few invasive techniques, drugs and surgical procedure to cure this condition. However this is not permanent cure as there is possibility of recurrence .This problem curtails one from leading a happy and active life. In ayurveda , herbal drug treatment ,dietary changes, lifestyle modification, exercise and yoga with different eternal treatment like leech application, siravedha, abhyang etc appear to work bu strengthening the walls of veins and other vessels.  So for proper understanding of this disease, the present paper highlights the anatomy of GSV with special reference to varicose vein its Ayurvedic management
