Efficacy of Tanduliyaka (Amaranthus spinosus) as a Dietary Regimen in the Management of Pandu (Iron Deficiency Anemia): An Ayurvedic Perspective

Abstract

Due to an imbalance in the body's doshas, notably Pitta, Pandu, also known as Anemia in Ayurveda, is characterized by symptoms including pallor, weariness, and general weakness. In order to manage Pandu, specifically Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA), this study examines the effectiveness of Tanduliyaka (Amaranthus spinosus) as a dietary intervention (Pathya). Thirty-four patients were given a 30-day supply of Tanduliyaka Swarasa. Pallor (56.96% reduction, p < 0.001) and dyspnea (55.89% reduction, p < 0.01) were among the symptoms that showed significant improvements. The Patients who consumed Tanduliyaka Swarasa showed a noteworthy increase in hemoglobin levels (4.91%, p < 0.01), but the Packed Cell Volume (PCV) only increased little and not significantly (1.43%, p > 0.1). According to these results, Tanduliyaka Swarasa may be useful in treating Pandu/IDA, enhancing hematological parameters, and easing associated symptoms. Its long-term advantages and possible synergistic effects with other Ayurvedic treatments warrant further investigation.
